Lore & Background

The Time-Twisting Machine was invented by Doctor Nefarious Tropy, a time-obsessed scientist recruited by Doctor Neo Cortex and Uka Uka. The machine allows its users to travel to different eras to collect Crystals and Gems. In the game's story, after the ruins of Cortex's space station crash-land on Earth and free Uka Uka, Tropy's device becomes the key to the villains' plan to gather powerful crystals and enslave the Earth. Aku Aku leads the Bandicoots to the Time-Twisting Machine so they can collect the Crystals and Gems before Cortex does. Upon the defeat of N. Tropy, the machine gradually falls into disarray. After Cortex and Uka Uka are defeated, the Time-Twisting Machine implodes and traps Uka Uka in a timeless prison with Cortex and N. Tropy, who have been turned into infants.

In Their Own Story

The Time-Twisting Machine is the central hub of Crash Bandicoot: Warped. It is split into five chambers; only the first chamber is initially available. Each chamber has five buttons that open portals to different levels. The goal in each level is to find and obtain the crystal hidden in the area. After completing all five levels in a chamber, a sixth button that opens a portal to a boss level appears. Defeating the boss makes the next chamber available. When all 25 Crystals are found and all five boss characters are defeated, the game is won. The first five Relics the player receives unlock access to a level in the "Secret Warp Room". Every five Relics thereafter open up another level in the Secret Warp Room. The levels in the Secret Warp Room must be won before the game can be completed.

Reader's Guide

To progress through the Time-Twisting Machine, the player must complete all five levels in a chamber to unlock the boss level. Defeating the boss opens the next chamber. The player must collect all 25 Crystals and defeat all five bosses to win the game. Relics are obtained by re-entering a level after its crystal has been obtained and completing a Time Trial mode. The first five Relics unlock a level in the Secret Warp Room, and every five Relics thereafter open another level. All Secret Warp Room levels must be completed before the game can be finished. The machine's chambers are accessed sequentially, and no other method of travel between chambers is described in the source.
